On Tuesday, March 5, the Davie High men’s lacrosse team traveled to Grimsley High School for its second matchup of the season, determined to continue on the momentum from their opening win at Atkins. The War Eagles faced a tougher opponent this time, but they rose to the challenge and secured a 16–9 victory, improving to 2–0 on the year.
The team faced some pressure going into this game. Unlike Atkins, it had played Grimsley in the previous season. Last year, the team won 18-4 and wanted to continue this winning streak. Henry Hines led the offense with five goals, while Jack Pisciotta contributed four and showcased his versatility all over the field, playing mid field majority of the game. Freshman Conner McNeil also had his first career start in goal, and junior Carson Pirk finished the game with a 70% save percentage. While these stats are impressive, Head Coach Brett Hewitt said they do not capture the core of the game.
“Looking at the box score, you see Henry Hines’ 9 points or Jack Pisciotta essentially playing every position on the field, but the heartbeat of this win was Caswell Moore,” Hewitt said. “Even on a bum ankle, he was an absolute warrior at the faceoff. He fought for every loose ball and barely asked for a sub. When your leaders play with that kind of ‘Iron Man’ mentality, it sets a standard for the rest of the roster.”
