On Wednesday, Dec. 17, the Davie High Swim Team traveled to the Greensboro Aquatic Center to compete in the annual Robert Sawyer Invitational, swimming fast into the Christmas Break holiday. The swimming War Eagles placed 7th overall as a team, with the boys finishing 6th and the girls finishing 10th out of the 24 teams that attended.
Over the course of three hours, the team produced 29 personal best swims, three new automatic regional qualifications, and one new all-time Davie High record by junior Zach Hirata in the 200 freestyle.
Hirata broke the record that stood for ten years by almost two seconds, swimming a 1:43.98. The previous record was held by Nick Sinopoli in 2015, who went 1:45.73 in the event. This adds to Hirata’s growing list of achievements, adding another record to his four at Davie.
“I want to end my career at Davie with five individual [records],” Hirata said. “I almost want to make it so the next time someone comes through and starts breaking these records, they are someone who wants to compete super competitively.”
Davie’s next meet will be held on Jan. 9 of the new year against South Iredell and Statesville at the Davie YMCA. This meet will celebrate the five graduating swimmers as they go into the world, taking on life after high school.
