The varsity football team was back on our home field this week against East Forsyth for the annual homecoming game. The sun was shining, the lights were on, and we were set for a fantastic Friday night.
Davie County was coming off of a big win on Thursday night by our JV War Eagles at East Forsyth. Defensive stops by Will Burris, John Stokes, and Mason Caudle combined with the offensive plays by Ty Miller, Markel Summers, Carter Helton, and Aidan Froelich led the War Eagles to a 41-8 victory.
Kickoff was at 7:00 pm on Friday night with the War Eagles choosing to receive after winning the coin toss. The first quarter started off slowly with both defenses holding strong. After a few carries by Tate Carney, Alex Summer’s pass to Jack Reynolds was complete and thanks to a key block near the end zone by Chase Robertson, Davie County put six points on the board. The PAT by Willie Moure was good. The score was tied at 7.
In the second quarter, Brodie Smith ran in a handoff for his first touchdown on the varsity team. The score was 14-7 Davie after a successful PAT by Willie Moure. East scored another touchdown to end the half tied at 14.
Halftime was dedicated to crowning this year’s Davie County Homecoming Queen. Twenty senior girls were selected by the student body as nominees for the homecoming court. The senior class chose our winners. The Davie High Marching Band played softly in the background as the Dancing Boots and cheer team set up a tunnel to showcase the court. The nominees looked stunning as they were escorted onto the field. Anticipation was high as they announced the Queen and her court. Third runner-up was a tie between Sadie Essic and Rachel Devereaux, second runner-up was Erika Terry, first runner-up was Presley Jones, and the winner of our 2020-2021 Homecoming Queen was Ashley Butero!
In the second half, the East Forsyth Eagles scored a field goal and two touchdowns to bring the score to 31-14. Davie County went scoreless after the half, and is now 2-2 and 4th in the Central Piedmont 4A Conference.
Coming off two hard losses for the varsity Davie War Eagles, members of the team have some words of encouragement. Brodie Smith, a sophomore and a wide receiver on the varsity team says, “We all played well, linemen blocked great, the receivers made some great plays, and defense did well all night. We just were having trouble executing plays. We’ll bounce back next Friday and hope to make it to the playoffs.” When asked about how to prepare for next week against West Forsyth, Brodie says that it is important to focus on the little things in the game in order to be successful.
Our JV team heads into their last game against West Forsyth undefeated. Quarterback Ty Miller says, “We need to have a good week at practice and finish out the season strong.” This is good advice for both War Eagle teams to hear right now as they near the end of the season.
