The Davie High Indoor Track Team concluded its remarkable season on Saturday, February 9, 2024, at the JDL Fast Track. Despite numerous challenges, the team showcased determination and undeniable talent throughout the season.
Success
The team’s success was evident in the remarkable growth displayed by each participant throughout the season. Every athlete achieved their personal best in at least one event, highlighting the dedication and hard work put into training.
“We’ve had a good season; we’ve had a lot of big PRs,” said Coach Diane Williams. “We’ve just had a lot of growth within our group.”
Among the most successful students this season was junior Cooper Williams who remained undefeated and took home the state championship title in shot put with a personal best of 58 feet, 6.28 inches. When asked how he handled the stress as he continued to rack up wins in his events, he said, “I try never to let the pressure get to me. But normally the pressure helps me compete better.”
When asked about their proudest moments, the athletes shared inspiring achievements. Kuhnemann reflected on his accomplishments in the indoor season, stating, “My proudest moment was getting my 55-meter dash down to 6.83 seconds and then jumping 6 feet, achieving my personal record.” Junior Megan Purvis, a long jumper, expressed her favorite aspect of the event, stating, “My favorite thing about long jump is pushing myself to see how far I can go. I knew I was going to meet my expectations.”
Struggles
As with any successful journey, the winter track season was not without its fair share of struggles. The team battled the harsh elements of cold weather, endured grueling practices, and confronted injuries. One standout story is that of senior Mason Kuhnemann, who faced a significant setback when he experienced a seizure during practice. Despite the seizure, Kuhnemann persevered and, after a month of recovery, returned to compete in his final meet. Remarkably, he achieved a personal best in the 55-meter dash, clocking in at an impressive 6.83 seconds, and soared to new heights with a six-foot high jump.
The Story in the Stats
The team’s journey included notable performances at various meets, such as the Turkey Invite, Stay in Your Lane Invitational, North Stokes Indoor Classic, JDL Holiday Invite, and the Mighty Vikings Invite. The season culminated at the NCHSAA STATES on February 10, 2024, where the team secured a commendable 20th place with 10 points.
In addition to individual achievements, sophomore AJ Sweet’s notable success in clearing 14’6” showcased the team’s prowess. When asked about handling the pressure of competing at a high level, Sweet commented, “I don’t really think about it. I’ve been doing it for so long, I just don’t focus on it.”
