As Davie High School’s Women’s Tennis team’s season comes to an end, they have left behind a record that is unmatched by any other sport at Davie High. They were the team to beat, but through unwavering persistence, they held their ground. Their record is 14-0 (12-0 conference) as the undefeated conference champions for the second year in a row.
When asked about the season, Coach Collin Ferebee describes his pride in the team, not only in lieu of their flawless record but after seeing the vast improvement in the past four years. “The seniors started their CPC careers going 6-14 and will finish their HS career with 24 consecutive wins. They’ve gone 12-0 the last 2 years and have repeated as champions for only the 3rd time in school history.” The team holds the achievement as the 2nd best 30-match record in school history after winning 28 consecutive regular season matches.
This record doesn’t come without hard work and dedication. Senior Sarah West Marklin describes what efforts and changes the team made to achieve this amazing season: “Coach Ferebee made conditioning a big part of our summer workouts in order to give us a more competitive edge. We also began doing mostly live playing during practice rather than drills to prepare us for matches.” She is overjoyed to finally have two successful seasons.
Elliot Newsome is not only one of the youngest players on the team as a sophomore but also was awarded player of the year as the first seed on the team. She is a leader and key player and will no doubt continue to contribute to Davie Tennis records in the future. She says, “It feels absolutely amazing to be conference champions, especially going undefeated for the second year in a row! I just feel incredibly honored and blessed to be a part of such a hardworking team, and I’m really looking forward to next year!”
As we enter next year, all eyes will be on the women’s tennis team, watching and cheering them on for yet another undefeated season.
