The Weekly Talon

About

The Weekly Talon is the official student news source for Davie County High School. Starting first as a club and formed in 2019 through a collaboration with English teacher Matt Barker and Adobe teacher Mike Poller, The Weekly Talon has established itself as a voice for all Davie High students.

Our mission is to provide students with the opportunity to experience the atmosphere of a newspaper while helping them express their individuality through journalism, photography, and digital design.

What Are the Requirements?

You do not need to have any previous experience in journalism, photography, or digital design to join The Weekly Talon. Our publication can be a great place to learn those skills and partner with senior members to produce content.

That being said, there are a few courses you can take that will help you out if you want to increase your skills and earn credit while doing so.

  • Intro to Journalism: Open to 9th through 11th graders, this class teaches the basic skills needed to write the news in multiple genres, including building stories and interviewing subjects.
  • The Weekly Talon: There is a class dedicated solely to the production of The Weekly Talon. In this class, we work to advance the basic skills learned in Intro to Journalism to ensure that content is produced consistently for this news site. Prerequisite: Intro to Journalism or by recommendation of Mr. Barker after consistent participation in a Weekly Talon publication year or promotion to the Editorial Board.
  • Adobe Visual Design 1 & 2: These classes teach students the fundamentals of the Adobe suite, including Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere. Interested in designing graphics or increasing your photography skills? Want to become better at producing videos? These classes may be for you.
