On Friday, March 26th, Davie High’s Varsity football team headed to Glenn High School for their last away game of the season. Despite a hard-fought and extended effort riddled with unforeseen delays, the War Eagles fell just short of victory, ending the game 53-46, Glenn.
Despite being scheduled for Friday evening, the game had to be pushed to the following Saturday due to a power outage in the area. Our War Eagles came back ready to fight at 11 the next morning for three quarters, the 4th being interrupted by a lightning delay. This pushed the final minutes of the game over to Monday night where Davie suffered its first loss of the season.
The Bobcats scored the first touchdown of the game but the PAT was no good.
After gains by Zaharee Maddox, Tate Carney, Brodie Smit,h and quarterback Alex Summers, Senior wide receiver Jack Reynolds received a pass for the first War Eagle touchdown of the night. Davie’s extra point was good and put the War Eagles ahead by 1.
Glenn goes for a deep pass up the center which was intercepted by Jack Reynolds. Davie took over with 5:00 left in the 1st quarter. After a false start on a 4th and 1 moved Davie County back to the 29 yard line, kicker Willy Moure successfully scored a field goal, bringing Davie’s score up to 10.
Glenn scored again with just over a minute and a half left in the 1st. Two point conversion attempt was no good. Another Glenn touchdown and PAT early in the 2nd brought the score to Glenn 19, Davie 10.
A big run by Tate Carney placed Davie on the Bobcat 46 yard line. Gains by Carney, Chase Robertson, and Zaharee Maddox ended with a pass to Jack Reynolds and a Davie County touchdown. Moure’s PAT was good. Davie 17, Glenn 19.
Glenn answered with a quick touchdown and good kick to end the half with Davie down by 9.
Davie kicked off to Glenn to begin the second half. Despite major stops by Caleb Bowling, Andrew Schuler, Avery Taylor, and Trevor Richardson, the Bobcats reached the end zone for a Glenn touchdown. PAT kick was good. Davie 17, Glenn 33.
With five minutes left in the 3rd, Gage Recktendwald’s sack resulted in a Glenn fumble. Hunter Rose with the fumble recovery gave Davie the ball; 1st and 10 on the Glenn 44.
Glenn’s defense came back into the game energized, stopping Davie County.
After a failed attempt by Glenn for a touchdown on their 4th down, Davie took over on the Glenn 34 yard line. Tate Carney with two big carries took the War Eagles to their next touchdown! The two-point conversion by Jack Reynolds was good! Davie 25, Glenn 33.
Glenn immediately answered with a 90-yard punt return for a Bobcat touchdown. Davie 25, Glenn 39.
Powerful runs by Tate Carney resulted in another War Eagle touchdown! Moure’s good PAT brings the score to 32-39 Glenn, with seconds left in the 3rd quarter.
Beaven Arey’s well-placed onside kick was picked up by Owen Byers. A 53-yard pass to Jack Reynolds was complete for a Davie County touchdown! PAT was good. Tie game; 39 all.
With storms looming and thunder in the background, Glenn scores again. After a Bobcat player was ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct, flags were thrown on the play and offsetting penalties resulted in a second attempt at the two-point conversion; the play was broken up. Lightning delayed the game with Glenn up by 6, 45-39.
The Davie County players head back to Glenn for a third time on Monday evening. The remaining 9:05 brought about another Glenn touchdown and 2 point conversion. A touchdown by Tate Carney for Davie County ended the game 53-46, Glenn.
This was the War Eagles’ first loss this season. We are now ranked 3rd in the Central Piedmont 4A conference with home games against East Forsyth on April 2, and West Forsyth on April 9 to round out the season.
