As we approach the end of the school year, many students may find themselves possibly missing some class credits—not an uncommon sight by any means. Whether you’re an underclassman attempting to get caught up, or a senior preparing for graduation, summer school is always an option that is often glanced at and looked over. Here’s everything you need to know about these credit recovery opportunities.
Underclassmen Credit Recovery (Grades 9-11)
It’s not uncommon for students to not pass a class or fail the exam after attempting it, and it can be quite difficult to find the time to fit those remedial classes into their ongoing schedule. But luckily, if you’re eligible, students can attend summer credit recovery classes to recover credits for core classes. However, not just anybody can earn these credits. The final grade in the class (or classes) must be between 50 and 59, and the final exam must have been attempted.

Furthermore, any credits recovered during the summer program do not factor or count towards driver eligibility.
Senior Credit Recovery
Graduation is something all students look forward to, regardless of how close or how far away it is. But in order to walk across the stage and receive your diploma, you must have acquired all of the required credits needed to graduate. If a senior requires one credit to meet these graduation requirements, they can attend a one-week summer program to complete this credit. An important thing to note is that if you are enrolled in this program, you will not have the opportunity to walk at graduation since requirements were not met prior to the ceremony.

Seniors who successfully complete this program will receive their diploma upon completion and verification of their transcripts, and a school official will further contact you to let you know that your diploma is ready. There is not a limit on the number of seniors that can be enrolled, but it’s still recommended to try and secure your spot as early as possible.
Although most teenagers prefer to spend their summer on a beach or hanging out with friends, summer school is a great opportunity to polish your academic skills, get caught up on various credits, and in some cases, a possibility to get ahead. Summer school also has the ability to provide structure to summer experiences, and make it more likely for students to stay engaged and focused. These developed skills are essential for success, and Chelsea Dvorak, an assistant principal at Davie, has some hopes of her own in regard to these credit recovery opportunities.
“I am hopeful that because monetary value is attached, and that students and families get half back for successful completion if they are 9-11th grade, this will be an incentive to take it seriously and complete it to get the credit,” Dvorak said.
While attending summer school can mainly assist these students academically, it can also provide some boosts outside of the classroom to help lead a healthy lifestyle. It allows the individual to engage in a regular routine, helps students develop more focus and increases their attention span, as well as keeps some individuals out of trouble.
