On Friday, August 29, the War Eagles traveled to West Rowan to take on the Falcons, a team that Davie has lost to in previous years. But this year, Davie emerged victorious, ending the game with a 30-20 win.
The game started slow with no points being scored in the first quarter. A kick from junior Dylan Cassetta put Davie on the scoreboard, giving them a three-point lead going into halftime.
“It was a surreal experience, and the feeling of my first ever field goal is not only a personal accomplishment, but it was a step in the right direction for the team to secure the win,” shares Cassetta.
Eleven minutes into the third quarter, Dreaton Nance passed the ball to Noah Dulin for the first touchdown of the night, followed by a successful PAT by Cassetta, bringing the score to 10-0.
West Rowan would eventually manage to sneak in a touchdown through a pass and a PAT. As the clock ticked down, Davie took one more chance to score points in the third quarter. With one minute to go, Ethan Driver caught a pass from Aiden Hall winning Davie another touchdown.
At the opening of the fourth quarter, West Rowan was able to score a rushing touchdown, lighting a small fire underneath Davie to hold their ten-point lead. The teams then continued to battle for control of the field, continuously pushing each other back until Bowling was able to make a touchdown following a successful pass from Hall. Cassetta’s extra point brought the score up 30-13. With two minutes to go, Davie had the ball on their own 35-yard line, and West Rowan capitalized on this position by scoring a touchdown through a pass and the extra point.
These last-minute touchdowns would ultimately not be enough for the Falcons to soar above the War Eagles, ending the evening with Davie’s first victory of the season. The victory was met with cheering on all sides, from the team to the band playing the fight song, to the Davie Crazies celebrating. Senior Maddox Creason calls this win “A huge confidence booster that brought us together more.”
The War Eagles are set to host the Pinecrest Patriots on Friday, September 5, with the Crazies theme being “Orange Out.”
