After a long streak of losing seasons and struggles to keep up with the growing competition, the Davie High Men’s Varsity Lacrosse team finally figured it out. They ended the season with an 18-3 record overall and went 10-2 in the Central Piedmont Conference—their best season yet. They had a lot of success on the field due to much improvement since last season. The team was an offensive powerhouse, with a number of players earning all-conference, with one even being named Offensive Player of the Year. Overall, the team’s success shows that practice and teamwork can create great results.
The War Eagles started the season off hot, going 4-0 versus their first four competitors. They played Southwest Guilford, Northern Guilford, Grimsley, and Page, and easily won each game. Going into their 5th game versus RJ Reynolds, they were confident but were quickly humbled as the Demons proved to be tough versus the War Eagles. It was a rough loss, 3-16, but this didn’t bring the team’s hope for a successful season down as they ended up winning the next eight straight.
Such a switch from an 11-10 record last year to an 18-3 record this year doesn’t come often in sports. The team put in work during the offseason as they trained hard and focused on their teamwork. For senior goalie Will Hedrick, it’s the chemistry of this team that definitely deserves credit for its success.
“We had a good season with a lot of improvement,” Hedrick says. “A lot of players really stepped up to help us win.”
This proves to be true as Davie put up six all-conference players—the most the program has ever had in a single season: Ty Carter, Will Hedrick, Henry Hines, Evan Helms, Elijah Chaffin, and Caswell Moore. These players were all instrumental in each and every win the team had this season.
The season also featured a star in the making, as junior Jack Pischotta was named CPC Offensive Player of the Year. He has been a huge part of the team for the past three seasons, leading their commanding offense, and will continue to put his effort into Davie’s success next year.
As the team moved throughout the season, the only downs they faced were against rival, RJ Reynolds. After being defeated in their first matchup, they wanted revenge when they faced the Demons for the second time in the season. They fought hard, played a better game, but ended up falling short again and lost, 7-12. Despite these two losses, their regular season was full of many other groundbreaking wins that truly defined this season for Davie.
As the team moved into the postseason, they made their way through the conference tournament, winning each game with ease. However, once they made it to the championship, they faced RJ Reynolds once again. The game ended up being canceled, so Davie will just have to work hard and get their revenge on Reynolds next season. The team did make it to round two of the state playoffs, where they faced Ardrey Kell. They ended up losing 4-20 despite great efforts on the field.
Overall, this season was a huge milestone for the team as they marked their winningest season in program history. The team plans to put in a lot of work during the offseason and come back even stronger in the future.
