As the gates to Davie High’s stadium opened up on the morning of May 15, students of all ages from surrounding elementary and middle schools made their way towards the stands in preparation for the exciting events ready to unfold—the Special Olympics.
The Special Olympics provides a place for students with disabilities to participate in a safe and friendly environment for sports and competition, allowing all of the athletes to have room for growth in specific areas of exercise.
With accompaniment from Davie High student buddies, who played a substantial role in the execution of the day, the annual event involved at least one entertaining event for everyone to participate in, including multiple relay races and walks, softball throwing, rabbits to pet and hold, and complimentary snacks and sno-cones to feast on.
Along with the support peer buddies provided the athletes with as they completed the events, the inclusivity and diversity within our community can be exhibited through the level of connection that radiated from everyone attending the event.
By fostering an inclusive environment such as this, the chance to support these athletes on one of the most momentous days of their entire year was truly a special moment for Davie’s community.
