Few moments in life can match the simple joy of waking up to a backyard covered in a blanket of snow with the message that school is canceled popping up on your phone. Snow days in Davie County are few and far between, so how have students and staff been using their past two days at home?
Senior Rylie Yount took advantage of the snow day to work on Weekly Talon articles and catch up on some reading.
“I’m currently in the middle of reading “Daisy Jones & The Six” by Taylor Jenkins Reid, and it’s one of my favorite reads of this year so far! I’ve previously seen the series, but the book is quite addicting to read.” She is also accompanied by her cat Inky, who she reports “is an amazing assistant in helping me get all of this accomplished on this chilly day.”
Sophomore Leah Cruz has been using her time to get her schoolwork done and then watch a movie while drinking tea and watching the snowflakes fall. When asked what she most looks forward to on a snow day, Cruz said she enjoys sleeping in, drinking nice warm tea, and watching Studio Ghibli movies.
For other students, the opportunity to spend time with family is one of the best parts of a snow day, no matter what form that family takes. Sophomore Dominic Barcenas spent his day with his family drinking hot chocolate. On snow days, he most enjoys “Having no school but also taking my dog out into the snow to run around.” Freshman Kathrine Godwin shares Barcenas’s desire to have fun with her furry friend when she has time at home. Godwin used her time off to play in the snow with her dog and to get some well-needed rest. Freshman Liam Smith similarly appreciated having the time to cuddle with his dog, Piper, but he also used the extra time on his hands to practice golf and spend time with his family.

Of course, with today’s snow still being coded as a remote day, there is still work to be done. Students like sophomore Addy Buchanan spent their virtual day wisely by getting schoolwork done first before meeting up with her friends later in the day. On a snow day, Buchanan appreciates “having time to catch up on work and not having to get up early.”
Sophomore Renna Margret Welborne most looks forward to sleeping in on snow days. Welborne spent her day playing in the snow, watching movies, and baking cookies.
Meanwhile, sophomore Mady McVey got creative out in the snow and built a snowman she named Jimbob before stepping back inside for some hot cocoa to escape the cold.
But it’s not just students who appreciate the extra time a snow day provides. For Davie High teachers, the days working from home offer other benefits. Science teacher Jeff McCandless spent his virtual day being productive by “working on developing new projects and lab ideas for Physics and Earth Science.” On days like these, McCandless most looks forward to “staying focused on class content and developing interesting activities.”
While Davie High’s campus was closed today for staff and students, there are more critters that make their home at the high school throughout the year who also found a few moments to enjoy the snow. Earlier this morning, Jesse Ledbetter, agriculture teacher and advisor for Future Farmers of America (FFA), posted a video on the group’s social media showing two pigs walking from the barn on campus having a “hogin’ good time” as the snow fell around them.
From building snowmen to watching movies, everyone has their own idea of what their perfect snow day looks like. As February comes to an end and the weather warms up, we start to forget the slow winter days like today. On days like these, we are reminded that sometimes we just need a break to play in the snow or an extra day to spend with family.
