The 2024 Davie High men’s varsity soccer team wrapped up a season that continued to build on last year’s efforts. Finishing with a 4-17-2 overall record and a 0-14 conference record, this season was another testament to the team’s dedication to improvement and resilience. Despite the tough competition, the players focused on building their skills and enjoyed every opportunity to compete and grow together.
The War Eagles started their season strong with a huge win against Southeast Guilford, defeating the Falcons 9-1. They went on to win or tie four of their next six games—one of these games included mercy ruling the Lexington Yellowjackets, the first mercy rule by the program in over 10 years. Their first conference match against the North Davidson Black Knights set the tone for a challenging set of Central Piedmont Conference opponents this season. The War Eagles lost this match 4-1 but remained true to their determination to do their best.
This season was nothing short of a challenge for the War Eagles as the CPC was tougher than many years past. With West Forsyth and Regan both being nationally ranked in the top 200 and having win percentages over 0.8, Davie had some tough opponents. Despite their talented rivals, they continued to fight and give their best effort.
“During the regular season, we gave a lot of the CPC teams a run for the money but never could finish it out and win,” senior Karson Yount said. Resilience to keep fighting has been a common theme for the men’s varsity soccer team these past few seasons.
Davie’s season showcased a standout player in goalkeeper Felipe Flores, whose remarkable performance was evident even against the toughest opponents. Flores proved to be a formidable force in goal, ending the season with over 300 saves—an achievement that shows his commitment and skill. In a challenging game against West Forsyth, where Davie faced a tough 9-0 loss, Flores still made an astonishing 30 saves, demonstrating his resilience and impact on the field. Flores’s contributions left a huge mark on the team, and his exceptional season will be remembered as a bright spot in their year.
Senior night was nothing short of special for the team. Before the game, ten seniors were recognized for their hard work and commitment to this team over the past few years. Additionally, every senior started during their game that night versus the R.J. Reynolds Demons.
“I appreciate the effort my teammates put in to make the season special, and I appreciate all the people who showed up to senior night to support us,” senior Abdullah Guver said. “I also want to thank the coaches.”
The night didn’t go quite as planned as the boys suffered a 9-0 loss to Reynolds, but the team was able to celebrate many memories and hard work stemming from a season of growth.
While the growth the team experienced in the 2024 season may not have been reflected in the standings, the bonds and skills forged this year promise a resilience the team will carry into the future. The War Eagles have shown they play hard, fight hard, and, most importantly, enjoy every minute on the field as they look forward to continued growth.
