On Tuesday, October 8, chorus director Brittany Darst held the first chorus concert of the 2024–2025 school year in Davie High’s auditorium. The pieces presented were performed by Concert Choir, Bell Choir, Treble Choir, and Vocal Ensemble. During her opening, Darst introduced the themes of the concert: “Together we are better” and “Friendship.”
Concert Choir
The concert kicked off with the concert choir performing their song “La Musique” by Alexsis Neenan. Following that were the songs “Let There Be Song” by Dave & Jean Perry, , “I Am Song” and “I See The You In You,” both by Mark Burrows, and “Together We Are Better” by Greg Gilpin. For many, this evening marked their first-ever concert, as the concert choir has grown from about 20 students to 50, with most new additions being freshmen.
“Everybody that I was talking to was like, ‘Oh my gosh,’ in a negative way, but I was more like, ‘This is going to be a great thing,’” Darst said. “This is growth, and this is an opportunity for the program to get bigger and for kids to see what we’re about.”
Bells Choir
Following Concert Choir’s performance, the Bells Choir took the stage, showcasing their unique talent for ringing handbells with sharp, synchronized movements. They performed “Song of Hope,” arranged by Brenda Austin. These talented bell ringers originally came together for last year’s Christmas concert. Since then, the choir has grown in membership, allowing them to continue performing throughout the year. Despite having only one flex session to practice before the concert, they managed to prepare effectively in just 40 minutes. Their impressive performance highlighted their dedication and teamwork, creating a beautiful and uplifting experience for the audience.
Treble Choir
Continuing the concert, the Treble Choir captivated the audience with five diverse selections, including well-known favorites like “This Little Light of Mine” alongside beautiful pieces such as “I Dream a World” by André Thomas, “Oh, Think of Me” by Elaine Hagenberg, “Simple Gifts” arranged by Ashley Nelson, and “Celebrate Music” by Joseph Martin. This year marks the Treble Choir’s first season at Davie High, as they replaced the second Concert Choir class. The all-female ensemble, composed solely of upper voices—sopranos and altos—highlighted their unique sound without any lower voices like baritone or tenor. Their performance created a vibrant and uplifting atmosphere.
“I think they did well,” Darst said. “They’ve got that class full of really good musicians with strong ears. They can hold harmonies well, and I think they’re doing a really good job.”
Vocal Ensemble
To conclude the concert, the Davie High audition choir, Vocal Ensemble, delivered a stunning performance of five songs, including “Canticum Novum” by Kenny Potter, “I Am In Need of Music” by David Brunner, “I Choose Love” by Mark Miller, “Who I Want to Be” arranged by Saleel Menon, and “Hand in Hand” by Rollo Dilworth. The performance featured impressive solos from junior Andrew Davis, affectionately known as Andy, and senior Annabelle Trivette. Davis took the stage for his solo in “I Choose Love,” followed by Trivette’s heartfelt rendition of “Who I Want to Be.” Their contributions, along with the choir’s harmonious blend, created a powerful and moving finale to the concert.
“I think for the time that we had it, it went as well as it could have,” Darst said when questioned about the expectations of the concert.
The Christmas chorus concert featuring all these groups—plus Show Choir—will be on December 10, 2024.
