This past Friday, the War Eagles faced off against the Reagan Raiders for the most anticipated game of the season: the homecoming game. Despite a strong fourth-quarter fight, the War Eagles ultimately fell short. The final score of 14-31 now leaves the War Eagles 1-2 in the conference.
Even despite the loss, huge stats were put up during the game, especially in the 4th quarter. Leon Bradshaw led in receiving yards this game with a total of 45 yards and three catches. Not far behind him, Ethan Driver, junior wide receiver, managed 43 yards and scored all of Davie’s touchdowns.
Quarterback Draeton Nance again had some spectacular plays this game. He completed 13 out of 19 passes and averaged 11 yards per attempt. When discussing his performance, he empathized that improvement comes from diligent practice and purposeful reflection.
“It’s more out of practice,” Nance says. “I’m watching the film, seeing what I can do better, and just making it right. And in practice, I go 100% and my teammates motivate me.”
Despite a slow start offensively in the first three quarters, the War Eagles had a remarkable fourth quarter.. Davie scored two touchdowns and kept the Raiders out of the endzone. Keeping a team motivated despite such a scoring deficit can be challenging, but Nance believes in the importance of pushing the team to keep fighting.
“I just tell them the game’s not over,” Nance said. “I mean, if we had 10 more minutes, I say we come back. But I just motivate and tell them to come on, keep your head up. The game’s not over.”
Dealing with this loss was hard for the team, but they are ready to put in the work for their next matchup. They continue to set goals for themselves and for the team. Bradshaw stated that he plans to get at least 500 receiving yards by season’s end.
The War Eagles will host Mount Tabor (4-2) for the pink-out game on Friday, October 11th.
