The success of the women’s soccer team this season can only best be understood by first taking a look back in time to see how far this program has come. When compared to past seasons, the team has continuously improved on their record. This season, the varsity team won seven games, but even these numbers do not reveal the full story of each match-up. The varsity team started with three wins off the bat, though after this win streak, they would go on to fall short in their next five match-ups. But while they were unable to find their rhythm, the team was only losing these games by a single point, showing that the War Eagles held their defense strong.
Later in the season, the varsity team made it to the playoffs against West Forsyth. The last time Davie made it to the playoffs was in 2016, so this game was a huge moment for the program. During this game, they fell short 1-2, ending their season with a record of 4-8-2 in conference play. They finished the year sixth out of eight teams.
As the CPC tournament wrapped up, the women’s soccer team had more reasons to celebrate. Two of its players—junior captain Jaden Sink and senior Lauren Colamarino—were both selected as CPC All-Conference players and also earned All-Region distinctions. Additionally, Sink earned the CPC Defensive Player of the Year, and she was selected Top 11 in the region. Along with that, she has committed to playing Division 1 soccer at Miami University (Ohio).
All of these amazing achievements that the varsity team earned were equally as impressive as those of the JV team. JV also had a large improvement in their record this season, going from two wins this year compared to having only ever amassed four wins total over the past seven years. Despite their six losses, the team made up for it by having two ties and two wins. At the end of every game, they announced the player of the game, a tradition carried over from head coach Collin Ferebee’s time with women’s tennis.
“I was incredibly proud of our JV captains [Ella O’Toole, Ava Hale, and Emerson Logan], and I am looking forward to continuing to build the program with them next year,” Ferebee said.
As the JV continues to grow, the women’s soccer program has added a new coach to their team of two: history teacher Zachary Wood. He joined Collin Ferebee and Corbin Kopetzky, which led to new friendships between the teachers.
As the women’s JV and varsity teams go through their ups and downs, we have witnessed the community this program has brought to the school, especially with the seven seniors graduating this year. Sophomore Aubrie Palaski recalls her favorite memory with the team being “when we would all vibe in the locker room and on the bus before games.” She continues by adding, “The seniors would bring a speaker and play music. Everyone would get so hype and it was like a party before every game.” Sophomore Fuller Kate Holt’s favorite memory is getting to practice and being able to learn new things from the seniors. “I also enjoyed getting to bond with them in general,” Holt said. “They are all the best.”
As the seniors wrapped up their last season, Kim Torres-Ramirez had a similar fond memory as Aubrie Palaski. “My favorite memory would be dancing and singing to music in the locker room before games, but simply being with the girls was my favorite.” Skylar Link’s favorite memory was “After the playoff game versus West Forsyth, the whole team and the coaches were huddled together on the field sharing advice and telling our favorite times with the seniors.” She goes on to state, “Another favorite memory would be from the same game when Lana [Robinson] had scored for the first time against West Forsyth, Davie had never scored against West Forsyth in all four years of me playing varsity soccer.”
Both of these girls have watched the program grow to what it is now and have loved watching it grow. Torres wants to thank Coach Kopetzky for “trusting this team when nobody did and pushing us to the best of his abilities.” Link watched the program grow from being an easy team to win against to making the opposing teams sweat when played. “I am proud to say I have been a part of this amazing team.”
As the incoming freshmen join the high school, all the coaches are optimistic about building upon their success moving into the next few seasons, and good luck to the seniors of this program.
