Davie High’s men’s and women’s basketball teams played their inaugural “Hoopscoming” games this past Friday against Parkland, contests that ended with a victory for both teams. In beating the Mustangs, the men’s team also further solidified their winning streak, which has now climbed to 14-0 on the season. In remaining undefeated, the men are now tied for first in the conference.
The women’s team started the first quarter off hot, scoring 16 points, while Parkland could only make one 3-point field goal. Senior guard Peyton Spaugh worked her way into the paint, dominating the first quarter. They continued this momentum into the second quarter through a string of elaborate scoring attempts coming into halftime with a score of 28-19.
During halftime, the Hoopscoming Court was announced. All of the students and fans were anxious to see the results of the school-wide vote. The court included Vasu Gandhi, Ty Miller, Jalen Alexander, Eli Branham, and the winner was Markel Summers. There was much celebration as fans and students alike erupted with cheering as Summers was presented with the crown.
After the festivities that took place during halftime, Davie maintained the lead throughout the entirety of the game. The score went back and forth, but the girls were able to rally, giving themselves a double-digit lead, throughout most of the game. They finished the game winning 58-47, putting them at 2-2 which placed the War Eagles at 5th in the CPC.
The men’s basketball team knew that they had to secure this win in order to remain undefeated in the conference. Davie and Parkland battled for possession in the first quarter, only scoring 11 points. They were within one point of each other when Davie began to pull away by scoring multiple field goals in a row. Going into halftime, Davie had a comfortable 11-point lead, giving them the momentum they needed in the second half. They were able to maintain a lead throughout both the third and fourth quarters, which was guided by Junior Jackson Powers.
Both Powers and Junior Bryson Mickey scored 16 points in this game and had standout performances. This win, coupled with Davie’s historical win streak, created a wonderful ending to the Hoopscoming festivities.
