The Davie High School Band Program is known for its many accomplishments and accolades across its three ensembles and marching band. From winning The 2016 President’s Cup competition to marching in Chicago and Disney World, the program is built on a decades-long legacy of hard work and dedication. But, without the annual Dewey’s Bakery Fundraiser, the program would not be where it is today.
The Dewey’s Bakery Organization partners with schools, churches, and non-profits to sell their products as a way to fundraise. Every holiday season, the Davie High Band Program does just that. Due to the success of last year’s Dewey’s store, among other things, the program purchased a tenor saxophone, a soprano saxophone, two tubas, a vibraphone, and a trombone. With the help of the Dewey’s organization, the community, and the band family, this fundraiser supports an ever-growing band program.
“The band program’s atmosphere is one of family”, says band captain Bonnie Jo Taylor. It is proud band members like Taylor who emphasize enjoying their time in high school through the music they play and the people they play it with. Many smaller ensembles, such as the Saxophone Quartet, have played at the Dewey’s store to do their part in supporting the program.
When asked to describe the program, band director Matthew Brusseau replied with, “Passionate.” It is the passion of band students, parents, and supporters that can make events like the Dewey’s Fundraiser, or pre-football game dinner, possible.
“Our ability to work as a family and a community toward a given task,” says band business manager Cole Fender, “is the most important aspect of the band program.”
It is important to remember that the Dewey’s store is operated by volunteers who spend their time (and often their money buying cookies) to achieve a successful fundraiser—no small feat.
This year’s store is located at 207 Cooper Creek Dr., #101, near the Goin’ Postal Store. The store sells sugar cakes, cookies, gifts, and even Mrs. Pumpkin’s Moravian Chicken Pies, and other items. Monday through Saturday hours range from 10-7 and Sunday hours range from 12-6, and it is open through December 24th.
To paraphrase an old saying, it takes a village to raise a band program.
