As this women’s golf season came to an end, both the players and Coach Bob Donley have something to be proud of. After losing two key seniors, there was a lot of uncertainty going into the season.
The season opener was to back-to-back matches against West Forsyth. Davie unfortunately fell short in both matches, but there was clear improvement among all players. Junior Callie Wisecarver joined the golf team during her sophomore year. She spent most of that season learning the game and continued to build upon her skills going into her junior season. One of her main goals starting this season was to shoot under 50. Through all of her hard work, Wisecarver quickly achieved that goal shooting a 48 and placing her in the lead among Davie girls at a CPC match in late September.
At the beginning of the season, the golf team was slow to gain traction, but soon Davie began placing at the top of the matches behind West Forsyth and Reagan. Throughout the season, Kate Sakai and Sophia Garza emerged as forces to be reckoned with, both earning the opportunity to play at regionals.
Going into the season junior Kate Sakai was the first seed on the team. Through many tough matches, and victories she was awarded all-conference and made it to regionals which were played at the historic courses in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
“This golf season has definitely been the hardest for me,” Sakai says. “Being number one on the team was stressful because I didn’t feel like I was good enough. Throughout the season, I started to get better and made it to regionals. Although regionals was my last golf match of the season it’s only the beginning for me. Knowing that I am capable of making regionals gives me motivation to make it to states next year.”
Senior Sophia Garza has been on the team since she moved to North Carolina in her sophomore year of high school. She was completely new to the sport but dedicated to learning the game.
“Golf most certainly has been a learning experience,” Garza says. “I started playing my sophomore year without any prior experience, and I quickly realized that golf is a mental game more than anything. It has abundantly taught me what it means to persevere, stay positive, and diminish any thoughts of self-doubt. This year I was able to make it to regionals where we played in Pinehurst. It was a one of-a-kind experience playing on an intricate course which was quite memorable. That being said, I’ve enjoyed my time on the golf team where I’ve learned a lot about myself as a golfer and a person!”
As the players and team keep improving, the women’s golf team will be fun to watch over the next few seasons. Each player should be extremely proud of their performance and we are excited to see what the future holds.
