For the second week in a row, the air felt like fall and the Friday night lights were on at Davie County High School. September 10 was supposed to be a bye week for our varsity War Eagles, but the postponed season opener against Mooresville was rescheduled for Friday night. 

The game started with back to back touchdowns for Davie. A pass from Alex Summers connected with Aidan Froelich putting Tate Carney in a position to run in the first points of the night. A second touchdown by Zymere Hudson, and good PAT kicks by Palmer Williams, put Davie up 14-0 with 8:03 remaining in the first quarter. Logan Yokely, JT Bumgarner and Will Burris on defense kept the ball in Davie’s possession. A quarterback keeper, a run by Tate Carney and a catch by Evan York put Palmer Williams in position to kick a 26 yard field goal putting three more points on the board for Davie County. A tackle by Justin Hayes and a stop by Matty Warner kept Mooresville scoreless in the 1st quarter.

Andrew Sculer, Jadon Davis, Logan Yokely, Coy James, and Silas Fuller played strong defense to begin the 2nd quarter, but a well played reverse landed the Blue Devils in the end zone for their first touchdown. Davie County answered with a very nice long pass from Alex Summers to Zymere Hudson for a touchdown. 24-7 Davie County. The defense puts the ball back into Davie’s possession, and a long pass to Zaharree Maddox for a first down sets Tate Carney up for another Davie County touchdown. The kick to Mooresville was returned to the endzone for a second Mooresville touchdown. The half ends with a score of 31-14.

Mooresville returned from half time energized, scoring a touchdown on the first drive of the second half. First downs by Tate Carney, Alex Summers, Zymere Hudson put Davie at 1st and goal. A quick pass from Alex Summers to Zaharree Maddox scored another Davie touchdown; 38-21. The Blue Devils’ momentum was kept in check by the War Eagle defense. Blake Jenkins, Coy James, John Stokes, and Jadon Davis forced the turnover on downs to Davie. After a big run by Zaharree Maddox, good passes to Zymere Hudson, a penalty on the defense puts Davie 1st and goal to end the 3rd.

The 4th quarter begins with a Davie County touchdown by Zymere Hudson. No PAT; 44-28 Davie. Despite strong defense by Willie Purvis and Blake Jenkins, Mooresville scores. The 2 point conversion was broken up by Coy James and the onside kick was recovered by Tate Carney. Davie County wasn’t done yet. A huge run by Tate Carney and a good PAT by Palmer Williams brings the score to 51-34, Davie. That will be the final score of the night thanks to a sack by Andrew Sculer, and Coy James with a broken up pass. Mooresville turns the ball over on downs to Davie with 44.1 seconds left in the game. 

Alex Summers passed for 430 yards tonight resetting the school passing record. His pass to Zymere Hudson in the 2nd quarter for an 86 yard touchdown was the WXII-12 Play of the Week.

Davie is 3-0 so far this season. The War Eagles head to RJ Reynolds High School next Friday for our first conference game of the year.
