Curriculum Night for the 2021-2022 school year will be held on Thursday, February 18th. It’s, well, a little bit different this year.

But before we get into all that, we first need to cover what Curriculum Night even is. Basically, Curriculum Night is a second Open House, except it takes place before you even submit your schedule. It’s an opportunity for you to get a better idea of what classes are offered and what courses you may be interested in.

This year, it is being held virtually instead of on campus, so here’s a quick guide to Curriculum Night 2021.

  1. Everything Will Be Held Via Google Meet

The only way to take part in Curriculum Night this year is to join a session’s designated Google Meet. You can find the link to each session on the Curriculum Night website. While you can’t get familiar with the locations of certain classrooms, you can get all the information you need for classes from the comfort of your own home. Save your gas for actually going to school.

  1. There Are Five Sessions To Attend

The first session, running from 4:00-5:00 PM, will be for upperclassmen (rising 10th-12th grade), and it will cover a large variety of course offerings and subjects, ranging from AP classes to elective courses. The second session is purely for rising freshmen, and it will go from 6:00-7:00 PM. This session caters directly to new students and any questions or concerns they may have, such as whether to take standard or honors classes.

There will also be an AIG Transition session for rising freshmen a little earlier, from 5:30-6:00 PM, and information on the STEM program will be available from 6:00-6:25 PM or 6:30-6:55 PM. Both of the STEM sessions are the same, so there’s no need to attend both!

  1. If You Already Have Questions, You Can Ask Them Ahead of Time

There is currently a question form already open under the Curriculum Night tab on the Davie High School website, so you can ask whatever questions you may have ahead of time without worrying about remembering them for Thursday night.

  1. Have No Idea What Classes to Take Next Year? No Worries!

The wonderful thing about Curriculum Night being virtual this year is that many departments have already made preview videos for your viewing pleasure. You can go ahead and get a feel for what is being offered and what you might be interested in ahead of time, without having to actually contact any teachers yourself.

For a more detailed list of course offerings, head on over to the Student Services website and check out the 2021-2022 Registration Book. If you want to know more about registration itself, be sure to check out our article, “Understanding Your Class Registration, From a Senior.”

  1. You Can Start Planning Out Your Schedule For the Next Few Years

Of course, if you are a rising senior, this Curriculum Night will be your last hurrah, so this doesn’t apply to you. For everyone else who still has a few years to go, this year is the perfect time for you to craft a rough draft for your future schedules if you haven’t done so already. Many departments have included handy little flowcharts for you to map out a path for yourself as you knock prerequisites out of the way. These are all available on the Curriculum Night website right now, so take advantage of this valuable resource!

  1. What About Clubs?

Usually, many clubs from around the school take part in Curriculum Night, but they are unfortunately not a part of this year’s line-up. If you’re interested in getting involved in some of the clubs Davie High has to offer, be sure to check back here on The Weekly Talon for future coverage of club events.

Above all else, Curriculum Night is a time to look to the future and plan your next steps. It’s hard to tell what the future will hold, but one thing is certain—there will still be classes to take, and an academic journey to go on should you choose to. Sometimes, the sheer abundance of course offerings can get pretty intimidating, but Curriculum Night is a great opportunity to alleviate some of that uncertainty. The sessions that will be held on the 18th will absolutely be worth your while.

Plus, let’s be honest — Curriculum Night is pretty cool this year.
