The Davie County War Eagles traveled to Kernersville on Friday, September 23, 2022, to face the East Forsyth Eagles, one of the top teams in the state. While it was a tough game ending in a 56-21 loss for our varsity boys, putting 21 points on the board against this team is something to be proud of as we head home to play Reagan this week.
Davie was first to receive but made little progress and was forced to punt. The first possession by East Forsyth was a long drive with several downs but ended with seven points on the board.
Davie’s next possession saw first downs by Markel Summers and Brodie Smith, but despite their efforts, Davie turned it over on downs on the 33 yard-line. East Forsyth moved quickly toward the end zone for another touchdown; 14-0 East.
With Davie County back in possession, Markel Summers, Brodie Smith, Ty Miller, and Grey Deal move the ball, but come up 4th and 5 on the 45 yard-line; Davie punts.
The War Eagles stop East Forsyth on the next possession, but not for long. Despite an impressive tackle by Mason Shermer, the East Eagles get a 1st down and score on a 2nd down pass.
Davie’s luck wasn’t changing as Miller’s 3rd down pass was tipped and intercepted on the 25-yard line. However, East fumbles with 1:15 left in the half, and Davie recovers. Davie fails to advance and we punt with 18 seconds left in the half. The Eagles returned the ball all the way to the end zone, but the TD was recalled for one untimed down on a penalty for a blindside tackle. The first half ends with a 21-0 deficit for the War Eagles.
The second half begins with some hope as Justin Hayes recovers a bobble and forced the turnover on the 14 yard-line. Davie can’t get the first down, and Palmer Williams comes out to kick an 11 yard field goal. It’s good to put Davie on the board; 21-3
The Eagles answered with two more touchdowns bringing the score to 35-3. But, the War Eagles didn’t give up. After a good kickoff return and a huge run by Summers to put us in touchdown range, Summers runs the ball into the end zone for a touchdown. East is relentless, and the kick for the PAT is blocked; 35-9.
Davie’s defense is still there to play football. A sack by several War Eagles and tackles by John Stokes and Mason Shermer held the Eagles back, but a quarterback keeper to the end zone resulted in seven more points for the Eagles; 42-9.
Davie shows off their passing game to Deal for a 1st down, then Miller connects with Smith in the end zone for six more War Eagle points. An illegal procedure call on Davie County backs the PAT kick up 5 yards, and it’s blocked again; 42-15 East Forsyth.
East Forsyth answers yet again with a touchdown and PAT bringing the score to 49-15. But Davie County isn’t done. Miller and Summers run for consecutive first downs, and with a perfectly placed pass to the end zone, Brodie Smith puts six more points on the board for the War Eagles.
With 6:46 left in the game, the Eagles are still dominating the game. A giant carry by a fast East Forsyth player is called back to the line of scrimmage and the 1st down is repeated. Another breakaway run is brought down on the 10 yard line, but the Eagles carry it into the end zone for one last touchdown. The score will stay 56-21 as the Eagles intercept a Davie pass to regain possession with 3:15 left in the game. After two 1st downs, their quarterback takes a knee to end the game and send the War Eagles home with their first conference loss of the season.
Due to the forecasted tropical weather as Hurricane Ian moves up the east coast, the game against Reagan has been moved to Thursday night at home.
