There’s just something magical about a cold winter evening spent snuggled up on the couch with a blanket, some hot chocolate, and a good movie. Movies produced in all different decades are watched nationally throughout the holiday season, and with Winter Break in full swing, now is as good of a time as any to treat yourself to any number of these classic films.
We asked our Weekly Talon staff to recommend some of their favorite movies for the holiday season. Here are our Top 5 Holiday movies!
#1 Home Alone
Our #1 choice is a classic! Home Alone is about an 8-year old boy named Kevin who gets in trouble the night before a family trip to Paris. The next morning, he awakes to an empty house. Realizing he has been forgotten at home by his parents, Kevin decides that he must protect his house from two eccentric invaders. This movie is filled with action, adventure, comedy, and grossed nearly $476.7 million worldwide!
#2 The Santa Clause
The Santa Clause is our #2 choice! Tim Allen plays Scott Calvin, a divorced father who accidentally caused a man in a Santa suit to fall off of a roof. After this debacle, Scott is informed that he must take the man’s place as Santa Claus. Viewers rate this movie as “heartwarming” and “one of the best holiday films ever made”!
#3 Elf
A human raised by elves travels from the North Pole to New York to find his father! Elf, our #3 choice is a holiday comedy! Will Ferrell plays the character “Buddy,” who believes he is an elf. Buddy experiences a roller coaster of emotions as he and his father attempt to create a relationship with each other. However, Buddy’s father does not have the same intentions as he wishes to change the way Buddy acts and dresses.
#4 The Polar Express
Another classic! Originally a children’s book published 36 years ago, The Polar Express movie was later adapted for film in 2004. The titular “Polar Express” is a train that takes kids on a miraculous adventure to the North Pole. A doubtful boy was one of the kids on the train; however, his adventure conveys the importance of believing.
#5 How The Grinch Stole Christmas
One of the most iconic childhood holiday movies ever made, How The Grinch Stole Christmas is our #5 choice! A grumpy, green creature named “The Grinch” goes around the town of Whoville stealing Christmas gifts and decorations. However, by the end of the movie, he realizes the true meaning of Christmas and is changed forever.
