Friday, September 3, 2021 marked the Davie County War Eagles’ first home game of the season. The weather felt like fall and the stands were packed with people who have been waiting for this moment for a year and a half. Initially, this game was supposed to be played against North Davidson, but because of unforeseen Covid-19 circumstances the game was sadly cancelled. As said by @DavieAthletics on Twitter, “We are feverishly looking for an away JV game and home televised Varsity game on My48.” Luckily, the Lake Norman Wildcats were able to fill North Davidson’s spot. This extremely high energy game resulted in a 42-28 win for Davie County, and a long drive back home for Lake Norman.
Davie County started off the first quarter strong with key advances by Brodie Smith and Tate Carney. Tate Carney ran in the first touchdown of the night!
After the kickoff by Lake Norman, the crowd went wild with a recovered fumble by Davie County.
Quickly after, Zymere Hudson reached the end zone bringing the score to 14-0.
Our defense had several highlights this game, two being the major stops by linemen Peyton Helton and Mason Shermer. Logan Yokely prevented the Wildcats from scoring on a breakaway run. Brandon Wood, Jadon Davis, Logan Yokely, Andrew Sculer, and Blake Jenkins were all key defensive players throughout the entire game. Lineman Mason Shermer had many major plays such as his block on a field goal attempt by the Wildcats.
Offensively, Quarterback Alex Summers had a great night with both long passes and well-coordinated handoffs to bring Davie High the win. Running backs Tate Carney, Brodie Smith, and Markel Summers were a force as usual. Wide receivers Zaharee Maddox and Zymere Hudson gained several yards and points for the War Eagles. Palmer Williams, the kicker and punter for the War Eagles, made every single PAT attempted. This was overall a very clean game with few penalties and issues on the field!
The game finished with Davie County taking a knee and letting the clock run out. The players from both teams seemed thankful that they got to play, and Davie County took their second win of the season with pride. It was nice to see both teams walking the 50-yard line congratulating each other on a game well played. Davie will go on to host the rescheduled game against Mooresville next Friday!
